The Fight Against Mould
What is Mould?
Mould is a type of fungus that grows and spreads on various damp surfaces, both indoors and outdoors, in all climates and seasons. It can appear in almost any colour, though most commonly black, grey, or green, its colour can be influenced by its food source, humidity, and light. Mould is caused by excess moisture and is frequently found in buildings and homes, often growing in roofs, windows, pipes, and attics. When conditions are right in an environment, mould can thrive. Those conditions include rising damp, water damage, wet weather, moisture and inadequate ventilation.
Why get rid of mould?
Mould creates minuscule spores that multiply, and exposure to these spores can cause health issues for those who are sensitive or allergic. Health impacts can include a runny or blocked nose, itchy eyes and skin, and wheezing. Additionally, mould can reduce the value of your home or property and in severe circumstances may even cause structural damage if left untreated.
How to control it?
To control mould growth, ensure good ventilation by opening windows and using exhaust fans, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Promptly dry clothes and wet surfaces. Regularly air out wardrobes and cupboards, and use moisture absorbers in basements, wardrobes, and closed off rooms.
Here are some specific actions that help prevent mould growth:
- Open windows and doors to let fresh air in and reduce humidity.
- Open blinds and curtains during the day to allow sunlight in.
- Turn on exhaust fans or open windows in bathrooms, laundries, and kitchens to eliminate steam.
- Wipe down tiles to remove soap scum that mould feeds on.
- Wipe away any moisture from windows and walls to keep your home dry.
- Dry your clothes and shoes before putting them away.
- Keep humidity levels low by purchasing indoor plants, taking cooler showers, getting a dehumidifier
- Ensure sufficient fresh air circulation for example by using ceiling fans.
- Add mould inhibitors to paint before painting.
